virtual jobs on Second Life |
Randstad is the first HR services provider that opened a branch on Second Life. With the opening of a virtual branch, job seekers can also come to Randstad in the virtual world of Second Life.
Candidates get paid in Linden dollars, the official currency of Second Life. The branch also offers real jobs, there are three vacancies at this moment; one as a manager of the 'avatar' (a virtual character on Second Life) of a Dutch law firm and there are two positions at ABN AMRO as the manager of the virtual hostess at ABN (the candidates get paid in real life euros).
With our presence on Second Life, Randstad cooperates with a university in Amsterdam to do research about the influence of virtual worlds on social networks. They will also see if employees in virtual worlds are treated differently than employees are treated in daily life.
View our promotion film on Youtube. If you have an Avatar account (this means you are resident of Second Life), you can visit the Randstad branch: http://slurl.com/secondlife/randstad/50/100/50.
About Second Life: Second Life is a 3-D digital online world, entirely built and owned by its residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by a total of 4,441,629 people from around the globe.
A lot of companies have discovered Second Life; besides Randstad, you can find branches of ABN AMRO, Adidas, American Apparal and press agency Reuters. And Duran Duran gives virtual concerts. |

the labor market |
|
|
|
Key work-related, social and demographic trends in our society are shifting. In Europe, the average age of the working population is rapidly increasing. The majority of larger corporations no longer offer 'a job and a career for life'.
In both the US and Europe many industries are moving their production base to lower cost areas in Eastern Europe, Latin America and Asia. This is driving a shift towards service and knowledge-based economies in the US and Europe.
Many governments are not equipped to redistribute jobs and skills efficiently in their national economy. From the employee's point of view, freedom in work choices is important, rather than collectivism and paternalism. The result is that flexibility in the labor market is already a key factor in creating a healthy, agile economy, and will continue to grow in importance for the foreseeable future.
The European Council established a High Level Group, chaired by Wim Kok, to carry out an independent review to contribute to the mid-term review. Its report should identify measures which together form a strategy for the European economies to achieve the Lisbon objectives and targets on competitiveness & employment. Read here the report "Facing the Challenge - the Lisbon strategy for growth and employment" that has been published on November 2004. |

In February 2007, Randstad and SEO Economic Research published a study on the ageing challenge and labor migration in the European labor market. Hard copies are available and can be ordered though email.
In May 2004 Randstad and SEO published a report on international employment trends and more specifically the market for flexible, and notably agency work.
